Bishop Community Concerts Association is a civic arts organization that has been serving Bishop since 1947 when a group of interested citizens saw a need for some attraction in the area in addition to the fishing and mountaineering experiences. They were aware of an organization in New York City named Columbia Concert Service, that specialized in bringing classical concert programs into rural areas. With the help of David Ferguson with CCS in Chicago, our group organized, formed a Board of Directors and launched the first membership drive on November 17, 1947. Memberships were set at $5.00 and the venue was the new Bishop Movie Theatre. The first concert series which began in February of 1948 included: Walter Cassel, renowned operatic baritone, Patricia Travers, child violinist and Solveig Lunde, concert pianist. They played to a sell-out crowd in the theater which seated 760 people.
The movie theater was not available for the next season so the venue was moved to the only other auditorium available, Bishop Union High School. Unfortunately, this resulted in a much lower membership as seating here is only 410. The 1948 season included: Igor Gorin, baritone; the St. Louis Sinfonetta and Zadel Skolovsky, Russian pianist.
Since the beginning, Bishop Community Concerts Association has offered a season while evolving over the years. CCS went through a series of changes and eventually ran into serious financial and legal problems in the late 1990s. Our Board of Directors made the choice to divest from this group and make a go of it on our own. This has worked well and among other things has given us a much wider choice of programs to present to our audience.
Each entertainment season, based on membership revenue, we present a series of musical entertainment experiences for the Fall and Spring Season. We include names of the selected performers, photos, and the scheduled date of the performances for the complete season on the CONCERTS page of this site.
On the TICKETS page, we have information about how you can become a member and enjoy the varied performances that have been selected for the community.
Our goal remains “to offer our community the opportunity to experience the magic of live performance by bringing artist and audience together.”
Bishop Community Concerts Association offers an outreach program to K-12 students in Inyo and Mono Counties. This program encourages interest and appreciation of performing arts. Select artists provide an outreach program for students during the school day. The outreach program provides the opportunity for local youth to experience live performing arts in a setting that is both fun and educational. During this program the artists don’t just perform, they interact with students to inspire an interest in performing arts.
GET INVOLVED Volunteers are needed to continue bringing these outstanding artists to Bishop. Consider joining the BCCA Board. If you have a passion for performing arts and have time to share please send us an e-mail at: firstname.lastname@example.org or talk to any board member at the next concert!
